Developing the Ecosocialist Action Network

Draft proposals on the new Ecosocialist Action Network

The aim is to encourage the widest possible number of people to take local action on the environmental crisis based on socialist principles as outlined in the conference statement.

1) Two meetings a month

The first is the full EAN monthly meeting. This alternates with a monthly of a steering group.

The EAN focuses on building grassroots campaigning activities, national interventions on demonstrations – based on the annual conference outcomes. The steering group ensures that actions decided by the EAN monthly meeting are delivered on. This meeting structure is interim for 2025 and can be adjusted according to need.

2) Who can be a Local Contact?

Anyone who broadly agrees with the conference statement and accepts the bullet points that come out of it – the bottom line being that capitalism is destroying the planet and needs to be replaced by a new social system commonly known as socialism.

3) What does being a Local Contact mean?

a) Being an EAN contact point for activists in your area.

b) Actively promoting the EAN through the labour movement, other campaign groups local colleges and universities and local environmental groups who are active.

c) Working towards creating a local EAN group to carry out local campaigns.

d) Bringing lessons of local activity to national discussions about what works, or doesn’t work.

4)  Basic Materials and resources needed

The EAN aims to supply Local Contacts with basic materials such as a postcard, leaflet, posters, monthly email news bulletin etc. to help promotion.

EAN should also consider sending a speaker to local areas to help local campaign work develop and work towards modest meetings in cities and larger town

5) What local campaigns are possible might be shaped by a number of factors such as:

a) How capital’s destructive processes are present the Local Contact’s areas

b) Possibility of campaigns for positive action around  eg transport, housing, public ownership of water and energy resources etc..

c) The key campaign areas that came out of the 2024 conference – perhaps through national days of action focussed on local campaigning.
